Dental scaling (tartar removal) is a cornerstone of oral health, yet it remains one of the most misunderstood treatments. Many patients avoid this simple but vital procedure due to fears that it might thin the enamel or create gaps between their teeth.
At PYS Dent, we are here to put these urban legends aside and examine the facts.
Food particles and minerals in our saliva combine to form "bacterial plaque" on tooth surfaces. If this plaque is not removed by regular brushing, it hardens over time and turns into tartar (calculus). Once tartar forms, it cannot be removed by brushing alone; professional intervention by a dentist is required.
Fact: This is the most common misconception in dentistry. The devices we use for scaling today work with "ultrasonic" vibrations. The tips of these devices vibrate to break the tartar and remove it from the tooth surface. The aim is not to harm the tooth itself, but to vibrate the hardened layer attached to it. When performed by an expert with the right equipment, scaling absolutely does not scratch or damage the tooth enamel.
Fact: Patients may feel gaps when they touch their teeth with their tongues after cleaning. In reality, those spaces were already there but were filled with tartar. Tartar pushes the gums down and fills the interdental spaces, creating a "false sense of fullness." When cleaned, these harmful deposits are removed, revealing the natural form of the tooth. The procedure does not create gaps; it cleans existing ones so your gums can settle back healthily.
Fact: Your teeth do not accumulate more tartar just because you had them cleaned. However, if you neglect your oral care routine (brushing and flossing), tartar will naturally reform. For a healthy mouth, a routine dental check-up and cleaning every 6 months is recommended. This is not an addiction, but a hygiene necessity.
If tartar is not cleaned, the consequences are not limited to aesthetics:
Gum Recession: Tartar pushes the gums, causing root surfaces to be exposed.
Gingivitis: Bleeding, swelling, and sensitivity in the gums begin.
Bad Breath: Tartar, which is a nest for bacteria, is the biggest cause of chronic bad breath.
Tooth Loss: In advanced cases, bone loss and loose teeth may occur.
Don't be late to get rid of tartar, achieve fresh breath, and prevent gum diseases. At our clinic in Kayseri, we offer a painless and comfortable tartar removal experience with our latest technology equipment.
